The scrappy challenger meets the category leader
Cove is the most interesting DIY newcomer of the past five years, and it has built a legitimate case against SimpliSafe on two fronts: faster emergency dispatch through RapidSOS integration and a slightly cheaper monitoring plan. SimpliSafe counters with a broader ecosystem, more mature hardware lineup, and the most refined DIY install experience on the market. In our side-by-side testing, SimpliSafe wins overall, but Cove is closer than its market share suggests, and for speed-obsessed buyers Cove's dispatch times are genuinely leading-edge.
RapidSOS and the dispatch advantage
Cove's monitoring integrates directly with RapidSOS, a next-generation 911 data platform that sends alarm metadata — address, alarm type, contact info, and even video snippets — directly to the appropriate 911 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). In our test log, Cove's average time from alarm trip to police dispatch was 18 seconds, among the fastest DIY numbers we've recorded. SimpliSafe (also ASAP-to-PSAP enabled) averaged 28-45 seconds. Both are excellent; Cove is measurably faster. For a deeper look at why dispatch infrastructure matters, see our monitoring benefits guide.
Why SimpliSafe still wins on reliability
Cove is faster, but SimpliSafe's eight-month uptime in our lab was 99.97% vs. Cove's 99.82%. Small absolute difference; meaningful when the product's job is to work during an emergency.
Pricing structure
Cove's entry monitoring plan (Cove Basic) is $17.99/month; the Cove Plus plan with camera features is $27.99/month. SimpliSafe's Fast Protect is $31.99/month. Cove is cheaper across the board — but SimpliSafe's monitoring tier unlocks Video Verification and priority dispatch that Cove's Basic plan doesn't match. On Plus, Cove's offering is closer. Three-year math: Cove lands about $500-$750 cheaper depending on plan selection.
Equipment ecosystem
SimpliSafe's ecosystem is simply broader. You can buy indoor cameras, outdoor cameras, a video doorbell, smart locks, water sensors, temperature sensors, glass-break sensors, panic buttons, and more — all first-party, all pre-paired to your hub. Cove's lineup covers the essentials (door/window, motion, glass-break, medical button, indoor camera, outdoor camera, video doorbell) but lacks breadth. If your household is complex, SimpliSafe scales better.
Install and daily use
Both install in 25-35 minutes. Cove's touchscreen panel is surprisingly good — arguably the best-looking hub in the DIY category. SimpliSafe's keypad is more utilitarian but the app is faster. Cove includes a lifetime equipment warranty if you stay subscribed to monitoring — a real value for long-term customers. SimpliSafe's standard warranty is three years.
Smart-home reach
Cove works with Alexa and Google Assistant but doesn't go deep. SimpliSafe is similar in reach but has more third-party accessories tested against its hub. Neither is the right pick for heavy smart-home users (see our abode review). Both are strong for "I want an alarm that happens to talk to Alexa."
Customer service
Cove has consistently scored well in CSAT surveys — U.S.-based support, relatively short wait times, proactive outreach. SimpliSafe's support is adequate but less frequently praised. For first-time buyers, Cove's white-glove approach is a real differentiator.
Our pick
- Choose SimpliSafe if you want the widest ecosystem, most mature platform, and more accessories to grow into.
- Choose Cove if you want the fastest dispatch on the DIY shelf and don't need a large accessory catalog.
Verdict
For most buyers, SimpliSafe remains the stronger pick and retains its spot on our best home security systems list. Cove is a legitimate contender, especially if RapidSOS dispatch speed is what you optimize for. Full methodology on the how we test page.
