Best for: Existing Blue by ADT customers maintaining service.
Blue by ADT is in maintenance mode — the feature set has been folded into the new ADT+ Self Setup line. We recommend new buyers pick ADT+ directly.

Legacy status
Blue by ADT is ADT's former DIY brand, and as of the current cycle it is effectively a legacy product line. ADT has consolidated its DIY offering under the ADT+ Self Setup umbrella, and new Blue by ADT kits are no longer the active recommendation — even from ADT's own sales flow. If you're researching Blue by ADT as a new purchase, stop here and read our ADT review instead.
This page exists primarily for existing Blue by ADT customers navigating the transition, and for new buyers who've been quoted Blue by ADT hardware and need to know whether it's still worth accepting.
What happens to existing Blue by ADT customers
Current Blue by ADT subscribers fall into three buckets:
- Active monitoring, contract still in force. Service continues normally. ADT has committed to maintaining monitoring on Blue by ADT hardware through the end of existing contracts and has published a hardware support window extending at least 24 months from the transition announcement.
- Month-to-month Blue by ADT customers. These customers have been offered migration paths to ADT+ Self Setup, typically with a hardware credit that covers a meaningful portion of the new kit. In our reader reports, offered credits ranged from $100 to $300 depending on tenure.
- Contract expiration approaching. ADT's retention team is actively routing these customers to ADT+ at promotional pricing. The monthly cost often lands within a few dollars of the prior Blue plan, but equipment is refreshed.
What happens to your hardware
Blue by ADT hardware continues to function on the existing Blue platform for the duration of ADT's committed support window. However, new features are no longer being developed for Blue by ADT, and third-party integrations (notably Google Nest) are being routed exclusively through ADT+. Practically, that means a Blue by ADT system will keep working, but it will not gain the deeper Nest integrations, newer cameras, or the upgraded monitoring-center features that ADT+ customers receive.
Blue by ADT sensors are not cross-compatible with ADT+ hardware. Migration means replacing the panel and sensors, not firmware-upgrading them. Our monitoring explainer covers how platform transitions affect continuity of service.
Installation and monitoring (for current users)
The original Blue by ADT DIY install was straightforward — pre-paired sensors, touchscreen hub, cellular backup — and most users completed setup in under 45 minutes. Monitoring continues to run through ADT's six-center monitoring network, so dispatch quality and response times are unchanged from what they were pre-transition. This is the one piece of Blue by ADT that is genuinely equivalent to mainline ADT.
Our recommendation for new buyers
Do not buy Blue by ADT hardware in 2026. If you want ADT's monitoring and brand, buy ADT+ Self Setup (the current DIY line) or a professionally installed ADT system. If you want DIY with better long-term roadmap confidence, buy SimpliSafe or Ring Alarm — both have clear product roadmaps and no platform-transition questions.
For pricing comparison between ADT's main line and DIY alternatives, see SimpliSafe vs. ADT.
Our verdict
Blue by ADT is a legacy product. Existing customers are fine to continue service through their contracts, and the migration offers to ADT+ are reasonable when contracts expire. New buyers should skip Blue by ADT entirely and start with ADT+, SimpliSafe, or Ring Alarm. Full context in our testing methodology and the best home security systems of 2026.
