A surveillance system that cost only a few hundred dollars may give police the only clue they need to catch three burglars. The teens broke into a Palm Bay house and it was all clearly caught on digital video. Palm Bay police said there aren’t many residential break-ins in the neighborhood in the northwest part of the city, but they admit burglars picked the wrong house. Two teenaged suspects clearly had no idea they were being recorded as one stuffed videogames into a pillow case Thursday morning at 9:45.The digital video is some of the best quality Palm Bay police have seen.

Would your neighbors call the police if they saw something suspicious? I’m not even sure mine would make a move if my house was on fire. Instead of relying on others, I like to take matters into my own hands—especially when it comes to security.

Don’t get me wrong; I don’t walk around with a baseball bat, but I can make my own calls.

Instead of holing yourself up to hermit status, iControl has come up with a way to leave your house and keep an eye on it too. The company’s new Home Security 2.0 solution allows users to peek in on homes, businesses, bushes, or anywhere else you want to set up cameras, via any web browser or cell phone.

“Businesses have used security cameras for years to deter would-be thieves from ripping off products or tearing up property. But the use of video surveillance systems in residential neighborhoods seems to have increased recently, industry experts say, as prices have come down substantially and lower-end models can be bought off the shelf at big-box stores.

Licensed security system installers say they are busy outfitting families, many of whom commute to Bay Area jobs, with four-camera setups that can watch various portions of their house 24 hours a day and include remote Internet accessibility.

“I never figured there would be this much business here,” said Cliff Rogers, who owns I Spy Video in Manteca. “It’s giving peace of mind to homeowners.”

When used effectively, surveillance systems certainly can be useful in catching criminals in the act.”

“While there’s certainly a variety of options to keep watch and protect your property from curious intruders, the latest branch of vCrib gives a new meaning to being on guard. Crafted by the designer of the Virtual Crib home automation software, the USB BB gun sports automatic firing, manual reloading, and the ability to fire based on commands given remotely on a PC. Moreover, the weapon actually packs a webcam on the barrel, allowing users to login via computer, tilt / swivel the gun with simple mouse flicks, and fire away if you spot any intruders within its broad line of sight. It shouldn’t need mentioning that we’d make absolutely sure our landlord was cool with mounting a remotely-controlled weapon in the window, but if you need to take home security into your own hands (without actually being at home), be sure to click on through to see this controversial creation spittin’ hot fury.”
