A home security system can be considered medical treatment under the state’s Workers’ Compensation Act, the Court of Special Appeals has held. The decision could mean the Comfort Suites hotel in Chestertown will have to pay to install a home alarm system for Carol Simmons, who was brutally attacked by a robber while on the job in September 2006.
While Judge Kathryn Grill Graeff agreed “medical treatment” has a liberal definition under the Workers’ Compensation Act, she made clear the appellate court ruling did not mean home security systems are medical treatment in Simmons’ or any other case.

U.S.-based security company Brink’s Co (BCO.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) plans to spin off its home-security unit on October 31, the company said on Friday.Shareholders in the parent company will receive one share of the new company, called Brink’s Home Security Holdings Inc, for each Brink’s Co share they hold as of October 21. Brink’s has applied for approval for the spun-off entity to trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker “CFL.”
