Some residents have attempted to fight back by installing home security systems. Those systems prove useless, however, if they are left off. When activated, a home alarm can thwart a costly crime: Police responded to a residential alarm Oct. 23 in west Wilmette. Officers found the front door forced open, but nothing else was disturbed. The owner was left with door-frame repair costs, which is bad enough, but loss of property would have been far worse had an alarm not been installed.</p>
