“We are not showing you the intracacies of how lock bumping is done for obvious reasons. Suffice it to say that with just a couple of special cuts on a typical household key and a little ‘know-how’ it can be done.

Using the key Rick made and the handle of a hammer to tap it, it takes him just thirty seconds to open the dead-bolt lock on Yvonne’s door. Yvonne was very surprised.

“Oh yes,” she said, “very much so. Actually, I didn’t think you were [going to] to get that open.”

Not only did we open Yvonne’s door quickly, but look at what happened when we asked Rick to try lock bumping at a Tucson daycare center with children inside. They don’t want to be identified, but they want to see if their lock can be ‘bumped.’

Two bumps and seven seconds later, Rick is in.

Rick suggests having a locksmith put tiny mushroom pins into your existing locks. That would cost about $30 per lock, plus fifty or so for the service call and would prevent lock bumping.

If you want to spend a little more money for security and peace of mind, you can buy a ‘bump proof’ and ‘pick proof’ lock. They’re made by companies like Assa, Medeco”
